What are the different techniques of Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

There are a number of different techniques used in breast reconstruction surgery, each of which has its own benefits and drawbacks. The most common techniques include breast implants, tissue flap surgery, and autologous fat transfer.

Breast implants use artificial implants to replace the missing breast tissue, while tissue flap surgery involves using muscle or skin from another part of the body to rebuild the breasts.

Autologous fat transfer involves using fat cells from another part of the body, such as the stomach or thighs, to create new breast tissue.

Which technique is best for each patient will depend on a number of factors, including the extent and nature of the damage to the breasts, as well as other considerations like overall health and personal preferences.

What to expect at the consultation for Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

At the consultation, Dr. Anjali will evaluate your medical history and perform a physical examination. She will also discuss the different treatment options that may be available to you. You may also have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the procedure and what to expect during recovery.

Dr. Anjali will develop a treatment plan based on your case, taking into account the type and stage of cancer and the shape and size of the breast. She will discuss the possible risks of the surgery and give you instructions on how to prepare for the surgery.

How is Breast Reconstruction Surgery performed at Dr. Anjali's Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic?

Breast reconstruction surgery may take anywhere from 1 to 7 hours (based on the type of operation chosen) and is usually performed under general anesthesia. Reconstruction might begin at the time of mastectomy (immediate restoration) or later (delayed restoration).

It may be required to carry out several operations in parts in order to get the best result with regard to breast size, shape, and symmetry. If the surgeon suggests a two-step procedure, it might be necessary. The first stage would be to place the implant expander, and the second would be to finish tissue healing using autologous tissue or a permanent implant.

Nipple Reconstruction

If your nipples and areola were taken off during a mastectomy to minimize the chance of cancer recurrence, you might want to consider nipple reconstruction. The nipple is usually constructed from the tissues of the newly restored breast. A few months after nipple reconstruction the areola can be made with a skin graft from the inner thigh which is then tattooed to appear as natural as possible.

What is the cost of Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

The total cost of breast reconstruction surgery is determined by several factors, like the timing of the reconstruction, the type of procedure used and whether the whole breast or only part of it is reconstructed.
