Sunandini Padhy, a 30-year-old woman, experienced drastic changes in her life after suffering a severe fall from a 2-wheeler. After the accident, she had multiple fractures in her facial bones, which left her facial features disfigured to the point where she could hardly open her mouth. Desperate for help and with nowhere else to turn to, Sunandini’s husband decided to bring her to Dr. Anjali Saple who specializes in plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Sunandini’s Story

Sunandini Padhy sustained a bad fall from a 2-wheeler in Jeypore, Odisha, following which she had a severe facial injury with multiple fractures of her facial bones. Her face was disfigured beyond recognition and she was barely able to open her mouth after the accident. She was taken by her husband to the local hospitals in Jeypore but they were told that the surgery for such a severe injury would not be possible there and were asked to go to Visakhapatnam. Her husband then asked around and was referred to Dr. Anjali Saple by the local doctors.

Dr. Anjali Saple examined the patient thoroughly and conducted all the necessary tests to rule out any major brain injury. Sunandini had multiple fractures of her facial bones and more importantly, the main joint of the jaw was also fractured. The team explained to the couple that this was a difficult case to correct because it needed not only cosmetic correction but also restoration of the masticatory (chewing) function. If this objective was not achieved, she would never be able to eat solid food for the rest of her life.

After the necessary consents were taken, she was posted for surgery for reconstruction of her face. The anesthesia was also challenging and had to be delicately administered because of the fractures of nearly all the face bones. The surgery was a long one lasting over 6 hours, during which the face was painstakingly reconstructed and put together like a jigsaw puzzle and the fractures were fixed with multiple mini-plates and screws.

Postoperatively, the patient had to be monitored in the intensive care unit for 3 days till the swelling settled and she was able to breathe normally. She had to undergo multiple sessions of physiotherapy so that her mouth opening improved. She also went through the scar management protocol that was advised to her. All through this time, Dr. Anjali kept counseling the patient and her husband that keeping a positive attitude and following the postoperative instructions would get her as close to normal as possible.

Slowly and steadily the swelling subsided, the scars started fading and the face started assuming a normal appearance. At every follow-up visit, she was better than before. Now nearly 8 months after the surgery and dental correction she is almost back to her normal self and is absolutely elated with the result.
